Tips on how To Lose/ Win a Job Interview
1. Going to an interview empty handed. Some employers won’t tell you what to bring to an interview, they expect the candidate to know what to bring. It will be good going to an interview with all necessary documents, a pen and a writing pad if possible.
2. Attending an interview without doing research about the company. This will show how serious you are about the job, and will give you an insight into what the company is about and what they want from prospective employees.
3.
Arriving late for an interview. It goes a long way in showing the kind of
person you are and what your attitude
will be towards the job if employed.
4.
Dressing sloppily to an interview. When attending an interview is not an
occasion to dress casually, you have to be corporate in your dressing.
5.
Having a lengthy resume or unprofessional resume. Your resume should not be too
long, maximum of two pages and should include only things relevant to that job
interview.
6.
Inability to defend your resume details. You should be able to give “copious
examples” on details in your resume. If you say you are goal-oriented, can you
give examples of areas in which that is practical?
7.
Talking too much or too little. Some tend to boast about their achievements,
this may be good/bad. When occasion demand that you relate an example on a
question asked, you can do that briefly and make it relevant but do not be too
boastful.
8.
Saying negative things about your previous employers.
9.
Answering questions without listening or interrupting. You have to be a good
listener and be careful not to interrupt while the employer is talking. Take
the floor only when you are asked to do that.
10.
Not being audible or clear when speaking.
11.
Receiving or rejecting calls during the interview. It would be appropriate if
your phone is either switched off or put in silence mode.
12.
Showing interest only in what the employer has to offer monetarily.
