LASSA FEVER: Lagos On Red Alert
Lagos State Government has stressed the need for residents of the state to be at alert at this period owing to the Outbreak of Lassa Fever in the Country.
It urged its residents to avoid any contact with rats and store food in rat proof containers as well as cooking their food properly. It further emphasized the importance of Personal Hygiene, Proper waste Disposal and Environmental Sanitation.
EARLY SYMPTOMS:
- Fever
- Headache
- Chills
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Sore Throat
- Backache and Joint pains.
LATE SYMPTOMS
- Bleeding from the nose,eyes, mouth, ears and rectum.
- Eye swelling.
- Swelling of the genitals.
- Bloody rash all over the body.
- Eventually, Coma, Shock and DEATH.
MODE OF CONTRACTION OF DISEASE
- Ingestion of foods and drinks contaminated by saliva, urine and faeces of infected rats.
- Eating infected rats as delicacy.
- Inhaling tiny particles in the air contaminated with infected rat urine and droppings.
- Direct contact with a sick person's blood or body fluids through the eyes, nose or mouth.
